If you’re wondering when to book senior photos, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions families ask as junior year wraps up.

It might feel early when graduation still seems far away, but as a Barrington senior photographer with more than 10 years of experience, I’ve seen what happens when families wait: limited dates, rushed planning, and sessions that feel more stressful than fun.

Let’s walk through the best timeline so your senior session is something you actually look forward to.

Why Booking Senior Photos in Summer Is So Popular

Summer is the most popular time for senior photos — and for good reason.

Once school ends, seniors have more flexibility. There are fewer sports conflicts, no homework, and schedules are generally easier to coordinate. Summer also offers some of the best lighting and natural backdrops of the year.

In the Chicago suburbs, June and July sessions feature:

• Long golden-hour sunsets
• Lush greenery and blooming wildflowers
• Comfortable schedules with fewer school commitments
• More flexibility for location choices

Because of this, summer senior photo sessions often start booking in late winter and early spring. By May, many of the most desirable dates are already reserved.

Understanding when to book senior photos makes a huge difference in the experience. Families who reserve their session in the spring usually have the best choice of summer and early fall dates.

Summer vs. Fall Senior Photos

Fall sessions are beautiful — warm colors, cozy outfits, and soft September light. But there are some important differences families should consider before waiting until autumn.

Summer sessions offer

• Flexible schedules before school begins
• Vibrant outdoor locations with full greenery
• Plenty of time to order prints and announcements
• Early completion before yearbook deadlines

Fall sessions often mean

• Busy school and sports schedules
• Homecoming and college visits competing for time
• Tighter deadlines for holiday gifts and announcements
• More unpredictable Midwest weather

Many seniors love the fall aesthetic, and early fall sessions can absolutely work — but those dates typically need to be booked months in advance.

What Happens When Families Wait

After photographing seniors in the Barrington area for over a decade, I see the same pattern every year.

Waiting until fall can mean:

• Your preferred session dates are already booked
• You’re rushing to meet yearbook deadlines
• There’s less time to order albums, wall art, or announcement cards
• Session planning feels stressful instead of exciting

Senior portraits should feel like a celebration of everything your student has accomplished — not another rushed task during an already busy year.

The families who book early have time to plan outfits, enjoy the session experience, and actually look forward to the day.

The Ideal Timeline for Booking Senior Photos

A simple timeline makes the process much easier.

Spring of Junior Year

• Research photographers and review their style
• Follow their work on Instagram
• Reach out and reserve your session date

Late Spring / Early Summer

• Plan outfits (most sessions include 3–5 looks)
• Schedule hair and makeup if desired
• Review session prep guides

June–August

• Your senior session takes place

Fall/Winter

• Relax and enjoy senior year while everything is already finished.
• Use your images for Greek life, College submissions and MORE!

So you’ve got a senior! The countdown is officially on, and one of the most exciting decisions you’ll make together is where to take their senior portraits. Spoiler: the location sets the entire vibe of the photos — and lucky for us, Barrington and the surrounding northwest suburbs of Chicago are absolutely packed with stunning, varied backdrops. Luckily, I know all the best senior picture locations in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.

After 12+ years photographing high school seniors across the Chicago suburbs, I’ve scouted just about every corner of this area. Whether your teen is a nature lover, an urban explorer, a homebody, or somewhere in between, there’s a perfect spot waiting for them. Here’s a breakdown of my favorite senior portrait locations — and what makes each one special.

What are the best senior picture outdoor spots?

1. Meaningful, Personalized Spots — Your School, Your Home, Your Story

One of my absolute favorite things to do during a senior session is capture students somewhere that means something to them. That might be the front steps of Barrington High School, where they’ve spent four unforgettable years. It might be their backyard where they grew up playing, or the driveway where they learned to drive (sorry, parents).

These “home base” locations bring a layer of authenticity that no trendy spot can replicate. When we use places that are woven into your senior’s actual life, the photos feel real — because they are. And years from now, flipping through those images will feel like stepping right back into this moment in time.

Pro tip: Don’t underestimate your own home! A beautiful front porch, a cozy reading nook, or even a beloved tree in the backyard can make for incredibly meaningful portraits.

2. Near Water — Fox River Marina & Lake Michigan

Water is a photographer’s best friend. The reflections, the light, the movement — it adds a natural softness and depth to portraits that’s hard to beat.

Fox River Marina in Port Barrington is one of my local favorites. It’s the best location for senior portraits for those in Barrington, as it’s close to home, gorgeous, and photographs beautifully at golden hour. The docks, the water reflections, and the surrounding greenery give us so much to work with. It has that laid-back, Pacific Northwest feel — without the flight!

For seniors who want something a little more dramatic and iconic, we can venture to Lake Michigan. Whether we head to Montrose Beach in Chicago or one of the North Shore beaches, the wide-open horizon and ever-changing sky create absolutely breathtaking portraits. The lake offers a timeless backdrop that never goes out of style.

Best time to go: Golden hour — about an hour before sunset. The warm light bouncing off the water is chef’s kiss.

3. Urban Settings — Downtown Barrington & Downtown Arlington Heights

If your senior has a bold, fashion-forward personality, urban environments are calling their name. There’s something electric about city textures — brick walls, iron staircases, painted murals, shiny storefronts, and cobblestone alleys. They add visual interest and create images that feel editorial and magazine-worthy.

Downtown Barrington is charming and walkable, with beautiful historic architecture, warm brick facades, and quaint storefronts that give portraits a boutique feel. It photographs differently in every season, which means no two sessions ever look the same.

Downtown Arlington Heights takes it up a notch with more varied architecture, eclectic murals, and that bustling small-city energy. The layered textures — rough brick, smooth glass, painted metal — create incredible depth and contrast in portraits.

Urban sessions are a great choice for seniors who love fashion, music, art, or anything with a little edge. And don’t worry — I know how to find the best hidden gems in both downtowns that most people walk right past!

4. Forests & Forest Preserves — Peaceful, Lush & Timeless

There’s nothing like dappled light filtering through a canopy of trees to make a portrait feel magical. Forest settings are classic for a reason — they’re naturally flattering, endlessly beautiful, and photograph well year-round.

Some of my favorite forest locations in the area include:

• Vehe Barn & surrounding preserves — A stunning, tucked-away gem with rustic character and beautiful natural surroundings. It’s one of those spots that feels like it was made for portraits.
• Busse Woods (Ned Brown Preserve) — A sprawling Cook County forest preserve with wide meadows, wooded trails, and even a lake. Gorgeous in every season.
• Lake Catherine Nature Center — Beautiful, quiet, and full of wildflower meadows and wooded paths that feel completely removed from the suburbs.
• Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve — One of my favorites for that moody, lush look with tall grasses and winding paths.
• Deer Grove Forest Preserve — Stunning mature trees and trails that feel like you’ve wandered into another world.
• Crabtree Nature Center — Wildflowers, prairies, and ponds — absolutely beautiful in late spring and summer.

Forest sessions tend to feel calm and unhurried, which is great for seniors who are a little camera-shy. Nature has a way of putting everyone at ease.

The Top Indoor Senior Picture Locations for the Class of ’26-27.

5. My Studio — Controlled, Creative & Always Comfortable

Sometimes the most versatile and best location is indoors — and my Barrington photography studio is designed with seniors in mind. Studio sessions give us full control over lighting, which means consistently gorgeous results no matter the weather or time of year.

Studio portraits are perfect for:

• Seniors who want clean, classic images for announcements and grandparents
• Dramatic, fashion-forward looks with bold lighting
• Backup plans when Illinois weather (you know how it is gross it can be) doesn’t cooperate

A studio session can be combined with an outdoor location for the best of both worlds — and we do that a lot!

6. A Place You Love — Dance Studios, Gyms, Ice Rinks & More

This one is close to my heart. One of the things that makes senior portraits special — not just pretty — is incorporating what your teen actually loves.

A dancer photographed in her dance studio. A hockey player on the ice. A musician in a recording booth. An artist surrounded by their work. These images capture not just what your senior looks like right now, but who they are at 17 or 18 years old.

I had the privilege of photographing a dancer in her studio recently — the mirrors, the barre, the beautiful light — it was perfection. Those images told a story and I’m here for the uniqueness of YOU – always.

If your senior has a passion, a sport, a hobby, or a second home — let’s talk about incorporating it. Some of my most treasured sessions have come from thinking outside the (very pretty) box.

Quick-Reference Location Guide

How to Choose the Right Location for Your Senior Pictures

Not sure where to start? Here’s a simple way to think about it:

1. What does your senior student love? Outdoors, fashion, sports, music, nature, travel?
2. What vibe do they want? Soft and romantic, bold and editorial, cozy and personal?
3. What time of year is the session? Some locations shine in summer, others are stunning in fall.
4. How many looks are they doing? More outfits = more flexibility to mix locations.

Most of my senior sessions include 2-3 locations to give a nice variety of images. We work together during your pre-session consultation to build a plan that feels exactly right for your senior.

Timeless, well-chosen outfits photograph beautifully and ensure senior portraits still feel authentic years from now. Below are expert tips to help seniors feel confident, comfortable, and fully prepared for their session.

Why Timeless Outfits Matter for Senior Photos

High school senior portraits are often displayed in homes, graduation announcements, albums, and keepsakes for years to come. Clothing choices play a huge role in how photos age over time.

Timeless outfits:

• Keep the focus on the senior—not the clothing
• Avoid dating the photos with short-lived trends
• Create a polished, elevated look that feels intentional

When seniors feel good in what they’re wearing, it shows in every image.

Best Colors to Wear for Senior Pictures

Choosing the right colors can instantly elevate senior portraits.

Great color choices include:

• Soft neutrals (cream, beige, tan, gray)
• Muted earth tones (sage, rust, rose, soft blue)
• Classic solids (navy, white, charcoal)

These colors photograph beautifully in both studio and outdoor settings and complement a wide range of skin tones.

When bold colors work: Bold hues can absolutely shine when used intentionally—think one statement piece paired with softer layers. The key is balance.

What to Avoid Wearing for Senior Photos

Some items tend to distract from the subject or don’t photograph well.

Try to avoid:

• Large logos or visible branding. Don’t ever assume I can remove something in post-production without asking first, pretty please.
• Busy patterns or heavy graphics
• Extremely trendy pieces that may feel dated quickly. (I wore a Von Dutch hat to my session in the 2000’s…W.H.Y….!?)

If you’re unsure about an outfit, a good rule of thumb is this: if the clothing draws attention before the face, it’s probably not the best choice.

How to Choose Outfits That Feel Like You

Senior photos should reflect who you are right now—not a version of yourself that feels forced or uncomfortable.

Consider:

• Clothing you already feel confident wearing. They should always be tried on beforehand.
• Styles that match your personality (classic, relaxed, sporty, creative).
• Layers that add variety without overwhelming the look. Depth and dimension give some added extra touches!

Authenticity always photographs better than perfection.

Studio vs Outdoor Senior Photos: Outfit Differences

Outfit choices can shift slightly depending on the session style.

Studio senior sessions

• Clean lines and simple layers photograph best
• Solid colors and textures stand out beautifully
• Shoes matter less, but fit and structure matter more. Don’t wear stilettos if you want a field. Make it make sense. Unless you REALLY want to – you do you, boo!

Outdoor senior sessions

• Flowing fabrics and natural textures photograph well
• Layers like jackets, sweaters, or denim add movement
• Shoes and accessories become more visible

If you’re planning both, choose outfits that work well in multiple environments.

How Many Outfits Should Seniors Bring?

Most seniors bring 2–3 outfits:

1. A classic, timeless look
2. A slightly more styled or elevated outfit
3. Something which reflects you…a jersey, dance outfit, etc. It’s important to showcase YOU!

This variety allows for flexibility without overwhelming the session.

Final Thoughts

The best senior portraits come from thoughtful preparation—not perfection. Choosing outfits that feel comfortable, confident, and timeless ensures senior photos that truly reflect who you are in this moment.

If you’re ever unsure, guidance is always part of the experience. Senior sessions should feel relaxed, personal, and enjoyable from start to finish. Curious to get inspo from past clients? Check out the galleries which will give you a good taste of what other seniors are doing.

You’ll be getting a prep guide once you book your session, so rest assure I’ve got you covered as your photographer. Absolutely no need to worry about outfits, as I am always here to guide you and provide you with all of the things you’ll need to capture this memorable time in life.

Just graduating as a Barrington High School Class of 2022 Senior a few weeks ago, Amelia is heading to Saint Mary’s College in Notre Dame, IN. Her hope is to study social work and knock out her entire program in one swoop!

Barrington High School Senior Portraits That Actually Feel Like YOU

Here’s the thing: senior photos should not feel stiff or overly posed.

Amelia wanted something natural, a little editorial, and still totally her. So we built a session around that — mixing movement, relaxed posing, and locations around Barrington that photograph beautifully without feeling overdone.

If you’re planning your own session, you’ll definitely want to check out my guide on
Best Locations for Senior Pictures in Barrington & Northwest Suburbs

Because yes… location matters more than you think.I just know this chickadee is going to do big things. The best people I know are social workers, or people who are dog lovers — Amelia just happens to be both.

Cruise down this post, and you can see some ADORABLE pictures of Amelia and Miley, her doggo.

I’m so super in love with shooting sessions in the historic downtown Woodstock square. It’s about a half hour from Barrington, but it’s rich with super beautiful textures, and tons of character. A simple 45 minute session can yield SO many different background options.

What to Wear for Your Senior Portraits Pictures (Don’t Panic Later)

Amelia absolutely nailed her outfits — which made a huge difference in the final gallery. The white dressed absolutely popped across these bright colored steps and the contrast helped the images and my gorgeous subject really shine!

If you’re already spiraling about outfits (totally normal), start here:

Quick tips:

• Neutrals + soft colors always win
• Texture > busy patterns
• Bring options (I’ll help you choose)

I always encourage people to buy the big package. Not because I like your money (I do)… but how on EARTH am I going to choose between the horizontal or vertical shot above??? Impossible. They are SO different, and each so special.

Summer sunset light…the best.

What Makes Senior Photos in Barrington IL So Good

Honestly? We’ve got everything:

• Open fields with dreamy light
• Tree-lined paths
• Clean, modern backdrops
• And spots that don’t look like everyone else’s photos

Barrington is one of my favorite places to photograph seniors because you can get so much variety without driving all over the place.

And if you’re a parent reading this — don’t worry. I guide your teen through the entire session so they’re not standing there like, “what do I do with my hands???”

I’ve got them. Promise.

and now, ladies and gents….may I present …. M I L E Y!!!!!!

Totally had to head to my Barrington studio (located in Pepper Park, by the coffee shop) and make sure we documented these two ladies and their special bond. I know Amelia is gonna miss this girl big time in Fall, but lucky for her college is just a few hours away <3.

Your Senior Session Doesn’t Have to Be Awkward

This is probably the biggest fear I hear:

“My kid hates photos.”

Cool. Same. Most of them do.

And then 10 minutes in, they’re relaxed, laughing, and suddenly… crushing it.

That’s the difference between just taking photos and working with a Barrington senior photographer who actually knows how to direct people naturally.
